Ordinal numbers and how they agree
Ordinal numerals decline like adjectives, but at this level you need them almost only in the nominative — for floors, dates and order.
The first ten are пе́рвый, второ́й, тре́тий, четвёртый, пя́тый, шесто́й, седьмо́й, восьмо́й, девя́тый, деся́тый. The teens and tens follow the cardinals: оди́ннадцатый, двена́дцатый, трина́дцатый, двадца́тый, тридца́тый, сороково́й, пятидеся́тый, со́тый, ты́сячный. Note which ones take -ой: only those whose ending is stressed — второ́й, шесто́й, седьмо́й, восьмо́й. Everything else takes -ый or -ий.
Ordinals agree with their noun in gender, number and case exactly like adjectives: пе́рвый день, пе́рвая неде́ля, пе́рвое окно́, пе́рвые дни; на пе́рвом этаже́, до второ́й остано́вки. In a compound ordinal only the last element declines, and only the last element changes form for gender: два́дцать пе́рвый год but два́дцать пе́рвая страни́ца. The earlier elements stay in their cardinal form.
In everyday use you will meet them in three situations. Rank and order: пе́рвый класс, второ́й курс, тре́тий ряд. Sequence and repetition: в пе́рвый раз, во второ́й раз, в тре́тий раз — note that before второ́й the preposition в becomes во. And dates: тре́тье ма́я. The oblique forms exist and are common — на тре́тьем этаже́, до пя́того ма́я, в пе́рвой поло́вине дня — but they decline by the ordinary adjective rules, so you will absorb them as chunks rather than from a table.
Dates deserve their own note, because Russian handles them differently from English. Today's date, answering 'what day is it?', is in the Nominative: Сего́дня тре́тье ма́я. A date answering 'when?' is in the Genitive: Я прие́хал пя́того ма́я, Встре́ча бу́дет деся́того октября́. The month stays in the Genitive singular in both. Days of the week and months are written in lowercase in Russian — понеде́льник, февра́ль — unlike English, and unlike the way they are often printed in textbooks for learners. The full set of day and month names is under dates.
