Cardinal numbers from one to a million
оди́н has four forms and agrees like an adjective, the teens and tens are regular, and со́рок, девяно́сто and сто are simply odd.
The first ten are оди́н, два, три, четы́ре, пять, шесть, семь, во́семь, де́вять, де́сять. Оди́н behaves like an adjective and has four forms: оди́н дом, одна́ кни́га, одно́ окно́, одни́ очки́. Два has a masculine and neuter form два and a feminine form две: два до́ма, две кни́ги. Everything from три to де́сять is a single invariable shape in the nominative.
The teens are formed with -на́дцать and are stressed on that suffix, except for the first two: оди́ннадцать, двена́дцать, трина́дцать, четы́рнадцать, пятна́дцать, шестна́дцать, семна́дцать, восемна́дцать, девятна́дцать. The tens are два́дцать, три́дцать, and then the three that refuse the pattern: со́рок (forty, not *четыредцать), пятьдеся́т, шестьдеся́т, семьдеся́т, во́семьдесят, девяно́сто (ninety, not *девятьдесят), сто (a hundred). The hundreds continue the same way: две́сти, три́ста, четы́реста, пятьсо́т, шестьсо́т, семьсо́т, восемьсо́т, девятьсо́т, ты́сяча, миллио́н.
Compound numerals are simply juxtaposed, largest first, with no conjunction: два́дцать пять, сто три́дцать семь, две ты́сячи два́дцать шесть. Reading a number aloud is therefore purely mechanical once you know the pieces, and there is no equivalent of English 'and'.
The grammar attached to numbers is where the difficulty actually lies. Оди́н declines and agrees fully with its noun. Два, три and четы́ре put the noun into the Genitive singular and force the verb into the plural: Два студе́нта чита́ли. Пять and everything above it put the noun into the Genitive plural and normally take a neuter singular verb in the past: Пять студе́нтов чита́ло. Compound numerals are governed by their last digit alone. Numerals themselves decline — пять becomes пяти́, пятью́ — but at this level you only need the nominative and the two counting frames. The full rule set, including the special counting nouns, is under numeral-government.
