Conjugation II: the -ить verbs

Verbs in -ить take -у/-ю, -ишь, -ит, -им, -ите, -ат/-ят, with a consonant change in the я-form and mobile stress.

Second conjugation means the endings -у/-ю, -ишь, -ит, -им, -ите, -ат/-ят. It covers essentially every verb whose infinitive ends in -ить: говори́ть gives я говорю́, ты говори́шь, он говори́т, мы говори́м, вы говори́те, они́ говоря́т. A small group of short -ить verbs belongs to class 1 instead and must not be pulled across: жить (живу́, живёшь), пить (пью, пьёшь), бить (бью, бьёшь), шить (шью), лить (лью).

The я-form is where the surprises live. Many -ить verbs change the stem consonant there and nowhere else: люби́ть → я люблю́ (б becomes бл), купи́ть → я куплю́ (п becomes пл), плати́ть → я плачу́ (т becomes ч), вози́ть → я вожу́ (з becomes ж), носи́ть → я ношу́ (с becomes ш), крути́ть → я кручу́. Every other person keeps the plain stem. Treat the я-form as a separate vocabulary item and the rest follows mechanically.

Stress is the other thing you cannot predict. In говори́ть it sits on the ending throughout: говорю́, говори́шь, говори́т, говоря́т. In люби́ть and плати́ть it is on the ending only in the я-form and on the stem everywhere else: люблю́, но лю́бишь, лю́бит, лю́бят; плачу́, но пла́тишь, пла́тят. In смотре́ть it is on the ending in the infinitive and the я-form but on the stem after that: смотре́ть, я смотрю́, ты смо́тришь, они́ смо́трят. There is no rule — learn the paradigm, not the infinitive.

The traditional exception list is the set of verbs ending in -ать or -ять that nevertheless conjugate like class 2: гнать, держа́ть, смотре́ть, ви́деть, дыша́ть, слы́шать, ненави́деть, оби́деть, терпе́ть, зави́сеть, верте́ть. Of these you will genuinely use смотре́ть and ви́деть from week one: я смотрю́, ты смо́тришь; я ви́жу, ты ви́дишь, они́ ви́дят.
